FI Y5 WK 41 P. PINCHAS (Phinehas) THE MINISTRY OF VENGEANCE

Numbers 25:10-13

And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying,

Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, has turned my wrath away from the children of Israel, while he was zealous for my sake among them, that I consumed not the children of Israel in my jealousy.

Wherefore say, Behold, I give unto him my covenant of peace:

And he shall have it, and his seed after him, even the covenant of an everlasting* priesthood; because he was zealous for his God, and made an atonement for the children of Israel.

________

*[(eternal—Heb. B’rit Ce’hu’nat OLAM, “a Covenant of ETERNAL Priesthood)

Every sacrifice on the altar of the LORD is an atonement of this kind: an avenging of the holiness of God in the presence of the moral creation above and below. The smoke of its burning is a sweet-smelling savor in the eternal realm that brings about shalom on earth.

There is only ONE true ETERNAL PRIESTHOOD—The Melchizedekian Priesthood of the Messiah (Psalm 110:1-4 with the whole book of Hebrews). It is the priesthood that ministers without end and without succession in the realm of the Eternal. In the New Jerusalem we see its final form in the Ministry of the Father and the Son illuminating all of Creation from Transcendence without need for a natural light source. For there the Eternal Ministry is that of God and The Lamb. It is a perpetual ministration of Mercy based on the satisfying of God’s Eternal Vengeance through the offering once-for-all of the Holy Son of God.

Therefore, the Apostle to the Nations exhorts us in Romans 12:19, saying, “Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place to wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, says the LORD.” (Deuteronomy 32:35 w/ context) Study all of Isaiah 59 concerning this: it is the matter of sin leading to violent destruction from the LORD but peace coming to rest upon all who love him and wait for his salvation.

Compare Isaiah 59:17 with Ephesians 6:8-10 and see that the Christian’s ministry of vengeance is Spiritual Warfare conducted like that of a soldier in the natural realm. (See this in Romans 13:1-6 in which the very same armor and weaponry is described of the ministers of earthly vengeance [Romans 13] and the ministers of spiritual vengeance [Ephesians 6].)

God wondered that there was no intercessor to stay his own hand from taking vengeance (Isaiah 59:16 seq.). So then we, in the ministry of intercession and groaning in the travail of birthing, give solace to the wrath of God and bring about healing as a stream of mercy in the world. Let us then not be weary in this working, for the LORD is on our side to deliver souls.
