Leviticus 10:8-11 with Matthew 27:14

These two passages reveal one of the most profound, yet un-noticed, aspects of the life and work of Our Lord Yeshua the Messiah: HIS HIGH PRIESTLY ACTION ON THE CROSS OF REFUSING THE OFFER OF WINE MIXED WITH “GALL” AS A SEDATIVE AGAINST THE PAIN OF HIS CRUCIFIXION. Let me explain.

To begin with, the subtitle above includes the details of everything that I have to say in brief form concerning this question. But this devotion is too short to give the matter a comprehensive answer. So…please bear with a summary statement that needs much greater elucidation. Please forgive me for only sharing the key elements of what God the Father conducted with His Son as His Son oversaw his own Crucifixion as the High Priest after the Order of Melchizedek in the Eternal Realm of the Court in Heaven. (Book of Hebrews with Revelation 4-5 et al)

It is crucial for both Jews and Christians to understand this Eternal Transaction.

The passage in Leviticus 10:8-11 is the law of sobriety that was required for the High Priest, beginning with the first installed Levitical High Priest, Aaron. The context of this law is the death of Aaron’s sons Nadab and Abihu who were slain by the Presence of God when they offered unauthorized fire before God. This is similar to the death of Uzzah when he touched the Ark of the Testimony as it was returning to Zion in the days of King David.

It is hard for time-bound humanity to comprehend the utter importance of the Holiness of God.

The giving of the command of sobriety is therefore in the context of this event, the death of the two sons of Aaron. The implication is that these two priests were intoxicated with wine (strong drink) when they committed this unauthorized act of “bringing before the LORD strange fire, fire that was not authorized according to God’s command.” This is the sin of presumption. It was committed by the fallen angels in an Eternal context. Because of their Pride and Presumption those angels have therefore been doomed to Eternal Unending Destruction, because they are Eternal beings that cannot die or cease to exist in any absolute sense. Thus, Humanity’s struggled against sin in our Finite Time-bound World is the outworking of a long-term wickedness that is continually being resolved in the Courts of God in Eternity throughout ages of mystical duration; this is a resolution that will eventually be actualized when the full extent of the Work of Jesus on the Cross is consummated in the prophetic fulfillments of the Bible.

I must bring this devotion to a close:

In doing so, let me ask that you ponder the fact that Jesus refused the anesthetic of Wine mixed with Gall* because He was conducting the High Priestly function in Eternity of offering the Final Sin Sacrifice that removed the Curse on Creation that was due because of Sin; this Sin is recorded in Genesis 2-3 seq. The Sacrifice of Jesus on the Cross is therefore the Great Fulfillment of the Akeida in Genesis 22, the type fulfilled by Messiah on the Cross.

[*Greek khol’ay, poison, wormwood, anodyne, poppy—STRONG]

To keep from corrupting his High Priestly function, our Lord had the Self-Discipline of Sobriety operating throughout the process of His Sacrificial Death. This is the most amazing thing ever known in the whole experience of the Creation. See the response of the Court of Heaven in Revelation 4-5 to the Singular Worthiness of the Lamb that was Slain, the Precious Lamb Who bought the Redemption of Creation with his own Life.

I need say no more. This is one of the most profound points of intersection between the Torah and the Gospel to be found anywhere in the Bible.

Selah.

APPLICATION:

Take from this that your life is secured in Messiah because of His Perfect Priesthood. You have as your Advocate before God the Only Intercessor Who has overcome Sin and Death—the Only One who can stand between you and Eternal Destruction.

Do not take this lightly. Live a clean life before God. Repent when you sin, and quickly put your sins from you. Do not frustrate Our Lord’s Grace. Messiah’s grace is too precious to treat with the contempt of impudence.

At the same time, do not lose heart when you sin. He died so that you can live and grow in his grace toward maturity. Read 2 Peter 1:1-11 and follow the spiritual path of Jesus to development into his likeness and therefore toward your Eternal Inheritance in Him that is reserved in Heaven for you.

Be strengthened in Faith with Hope, my beloved. Be continually filled with the Love of God. (1 Corinthians 13 with 1 John, whole book.)

Amen. Amen.
