A Burnt Offering

HOLOCAUST: “(1)…a sacrifice completely consumed by fire; burnt offering….; (2) the systematic mass slaughter of European Jews in Nazi concentration camps during World War II….” (definition of “holocaust” by Dictionary.com)

BURNT: definition of the word “burnt” (Hebrew Olah) in the term “burnt offering” and it’s equivalent “burnt sacrifice” in the Bible, as given in Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance in 1894 (the 1st edition): “Ayin-Lamed-Hey, owlah; fem. Act. Part….; a step or (collectively stairs, as ascending; usually a holocaust (as going up in smoke):–ascent, burnt offering (sacrifice), go up to.”

VERSES TO PONDER:

Micah 6:6-7: “Wherewith shall I come before the LORD, and bow myself before the high God? Shall I come before him with burnt offerings, with calves of a year old? Will the LORD be pleased with thousands of rams, or with ten thousands of rivers of oil? Shall I give my firstborn for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?” (KJV, cf. also v. 8 with Psalm 51 and Isaiah 1:11 seq., the covenantal movement in the Tanakh from ritual sacrifice under the early covenants to spiritual sacrifice under the Davidic and Messianic covenants that bring to fulfillment the earlier covenants of promise. Ref. Dr. Barkley’s work “The Seven Covenants of Redemption”.)

Psalm 69:21: “They gave me also gall for my meat; and in my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.”

John 19:28-30: “After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might  be fulfilled, saith, “I thirst.” Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a spunge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth. When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, “It is finished”; and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.”
